Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

Gelco chimney cap installation in Dallas typically runs $340-$620 for a standard single-flue cap with proper fitment, flashing, and weather sealing, and we stock the common Gelco Series-A and Series-U sizes on our trucks for same-day replacement. Most Dallas homeowners discover the cap has failed after finding rust stains on the firebox, water in the cleanout, or hearing the damper rattle in a March windstorm. Corrine Halstead and our crew have fitted Gelco caps across Dallas since 2009, from Lakewood brick chimneys to Lake Highlands homes where the original builder-grade cap barely lasted seven years.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco caps break down into two main lines we see in Dallas: the Series-A (adjustable, single-flue, stainless or galvanized) and the Series-U (multi-flue, band-around-brick design). The Series-A uses a turnbolt tension system that fits flue tiles from 8″×8″ up to 13″×13″ - but here’s the gotcha: the 3/4″ mesh on older Series-A units doesn’t meet current Texas wildlife code for spark arresting, and if your cap was installed before 2018, you’re likely due for an upgrade on spec alone. The Series-U bands to the chimney crown and needs exact outside-brick dimensions; we measure with a masonry tape, not a guess, because a 1/2″ short band will loosen in a Dallas summer expansion cycle and let squirrels in by October.

We source Gelco caps through Haven’s buying network alongside DuraFlex and HeatShield materials. OEM Gelco is our default, but we also carry a stainless aftermarket equivalent for homeowners who need the spark-arrestor upgrade without the brand premium. The label is stamped on the underside of the mesh skirt on Series-A units; Series-U has a small riveted badge on the front band. If the badge is rusted off, we measure flue opening, crown overhang, and brick width to match the catalog.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Is Failing

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Is Failing
  • Rust streaks down the chimney face. Gelco’s galvanized models start at the weld seams, and Dallas humidity plus occasional ice will push rust through the skirt in five to seven years. Stainless holds longer, but the spot-welds still go first. We photograph the streak pattern to distinguish cap rust from crown wash failure.
  • Water in the firebox or rust on the damper. A Gelco cap that has shifted even 1/4″ off-center creates a gap the Dallas driving rain finds fast. The Series-A turnbolts loosen; the Series-U band slips. Either way, water hits the smoke shelf and pools.
  • Mesh screen detaching or sagging. The 5/8″ or 3/4″ mesh on Gelco caps is spot-welded to the frame. Texas thermal cycling fatigues those welds, and by year six or seven you’ll see the mesh bow outward or separate entirely. That’s an ember hazard and a squirrel highway.
  • Cap missing after a storm. March and April frontal systems in Dallas can pull a loose Series-A clean off the flue. If you’re lucky it lands in the yard; if not, it’s in a neighbor’s roof or the street. We check the flue tile lip for chips when we replace it - a chipped lip means the new cap won’t seat.
  • Draft problems or smoke rollback on startup. A Gelco cap with clogged mesh from creosote or Dallas pollen buildup chokes the flue. The mesh is supposed to be self-cleaning in theory; in practice, we clear it annually or the fireplace gets cranky.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Gelco Series-A single-flue cap, installed $340-$480
Gelco Series-U multi-flue cap, installed $480-$620
Flue tile lip repair (if chipped) $120-$200
Crown wash touch-up (if needed for seal) $180-$260

The range depends on three things: cap size and material (galvanized vs. stainless), whether the flue tile lip is intact, and if the crown needs resealing to support the new cap properly. Every Gelco installation we do in Dallas includes the cap, stainless fasteners, high-temp sealant at the base, and a camera inspection of the flue interior before we close - Clause 4 of the Haven Standard requires a photo record on every job, and that includes why the old cap failed. We deliver a written price before work starts, a written scope, and a written warranty. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation and materials.

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: from the ground, look for the Gelco badge, obvious rust, or a cap sitting crooked. Binoculars help. If the cap’s gone entirely, don’t run the fireplace until the flue is covered - rain, animals, and debris will enter an open flue fast in Dallas.

What goes wrong with DIY Gelco replacement: the Series-A turnbolts require even tension or the cap warps and leaks; the Series-U band must be level all around or it channels water toward the brick, not away. Both need a ladder at roofline, and Dallas roofs run steep on the newer builds and fragile on the older ones. More importantly, you can’t camera-inspect the flue from the top down to know why the old cap failed - was it just age, or is the flue liner cracked and sending corrosive moisture upward? We don’t guess. Camera goes in first. Everything else follows. Call (972) 284-1392 and we’ll quote it in writing before we bring a ladder.
