HeatShield manufactures two distinct systems, and knowing which one you have determines whether you’re looking at a repair or a full liner replacement.

HeatShield Cerfractory Foam is a spray-applied refractory coating that gets applied directly to the interior of an existing clay flue tile. It’s not a standalone liner. If the underlying clay tile has cracked, shifted, or spalled through to the foam layer, the foam cannot be reapplied over damaged substrate. We see this in Dallas homes built 1960-1990 where the original 8″ × 8″ or 8″ × 12″ clay flue has settled. The foam layer itself is typically ¼” to ½” thick when properly applied.

HeatShield UL Listing applies to the Cerfractory Foam system when installed by a factory-trained technician to UL 1777 standards. To identify what you have: look for a metal tag near the damper or a stamped date on the smoke chamber. No tag usually means the coating was applied without factory documentation, which we see frequently in flip properties around Bishop Arts and Oak Cliff. In those cases, we run the camera to measure remaining liner thickness and map crack patterns before quoting replacement.

Signs Your HeatShield Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

• Pieces of gray or tan material in the firebox after burning. This is delaminated Cerfractory Foam. The foam layer has separated from the clay tile beneath, usually because the tile has cracked from thermal cycling or foundation movement. Once the bond fails, the foam flakes off and drops into the fireplace.
• White or light-colored staining on exterior chimney brick. This is efflorescence, mineral salts carried through gaps in the liner by escaping combustion gases. In Dallas, we see this most on north-facing chimney exposures where freeze-thaw cycles, even mild ones, accelerate mortar joint failure behind a compromised liner.
• Smoke spillage into the room during startup or when adding logs. A damaged liner reduces draft efficiency. The flue can’t warm fast enough to establish proper draw, especially on shorter chimneys common in Ranch-style homes in Preston Hollow and North Dallas. The smoke chamber and liner connection is often the restriction point.
• Strong odor of creosote or asphalt even when the fireplace is cold. Gaps in the liner allow creosote-laden air to leak into the chimney cavity, where it condenses on cooler surfaces. You smell it through the masonry. In our climate, high summer humidity reactivates these deposits.
• Your sweep found gaps or missing mortar joints during camera inspection. This is the definitive finding. NFPA 211 requires a Level 2 inspection with visual documentation. If your last sweep didn’t run a camera and told you the liner “looks fine,” you don’t have a documented inspection. Camera goes in first. Everything else follows.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s no safe DIY path for flue liner replacement. This is confined-space work at height, with combustion safety consequences if the liner isn’t sized, supported, and connected to manufacturer spec. A dropped section can damage the chimney crown or roof. An undersized liner causes creosote buildup and potential chimney fire. An unsupported flex liner can sag and create a trap for condensation and debris.

What you can safely check: look in the firebox for debris or material loss, verify your damper opens fully, and confirm your CO detector is less than 7 years old and has fresh batteries. That’s the limit without training and equipment.
