There’s a safe middle ground. You can verify the model number, check for obvious rust, and confirm whether the handle operates smoothly. What you cannot safely do is work inside the smoke chamber or on the roof assembly. Throat dampers sit above the firebox in a space that narrows toward the flue; the refractory surfaces are fragile, and a dropped tool can crack the liner. Top-mount dampers require ladder work at height with proper fall protection.
More importantly, a misaligned damper plate creates a gap that looks minor but leaks significantly.
